Michaela Kennedy Cuomo, the youngest daughter of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and his former wife, Kerry Kennedy, has come out as bisexual for Pride Month.

In an Instagram post Thursday, Michaela Kennedy Cuomo sent wishes for a happy Pride Month “to the whole spectrum of sexualities,” offering love and support to all. She described herself as bisexual and wrote, “I stand in my queer identity with pride, and in memory of those who came before me.”

“I stand indebted to the activists who fought for my right to love and happiness,” she added. “I stand with a helping hand outreached to those finding their way from under socially constructed boxes to emerge from the closet. I’m standing with you.”

While she had posted messages online celebrating Bi Visibility Day, which is observed in September, and advocated for LGBTQ+ causes, “the Thursday post appears to be the first time Michaela has opened up about her identity at such length,” People reports. She is also an activist for numerous other causes, including mental health, sexual assault prevention, and support for survivors of sexual assault.

Andrew Cuomo gave a statement to People, saying, “I love, support and couldn’t have more pride in Michaela.”

Michaela Kennedy Cuomo comes from two prominent and powerful political families. Her paternal grandfather, the late Mario Cuomo, was also a governor of New York, and her father’s siblings include CNN anchor Chris Cuomo. Her mother is president of Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, named for the late U.S. senator and attorney general, who was Kerry Kennedy’s father. The organization works for social justice around the world. Robert Kennedy’s siblings, of course, include the late President John F. Kennedy and U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy, and several of that Kennedy generation’s children and grandchildren have gone on to careers in politics and activism.
