Brandi Carlile & Sarah McLachlan Duet on Stunning Live ‘Angel’

Singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan launched the all-women’s music festival Lilith Fair in 1997 in the face of concert promoters and radio stations that refused to feature two women back-to-back. Following a successful tour with Canadian chanteuse Paula Cole, she launched the massively successful Lilith Fair, which was also a huge hit with lesbians — for obvious reasons. Among the dozens of acts that performed over at Lilith Fair during the summers of 1997, 98, and 99 were McLachlan, Cole, Bonnie Raitt, India Arie, Natalie Merchant, Tracy Chapman, and Fiona Apple. Over the weekend, out multi-Grammy winner Brandi Carlile shared a video of her show at the Gorge in her home state of Washington where she and McLachlan performed a breathtaking duet of the latter’s massive hit of a power ballad, “Angel.”

In her post, Carlile shared that she was a 16-year-old in the audience at the 1997 Lilith performance at the Gorge, and it changed her life.

“In 1997 @officialsarahmclachlan’s #LilithFair came to the US via The Gorge in my home state of Washington. I sat up on the hill in the grass as Sarah sang this song and I began to dream a 16-year-olds dream…. I put myself on that stage with her in my mind… 25 years later this happened,” Carlile wrote followed by a heart and a crying emoji.  “We owe @officialsarahmclachlan so much.”

In the video below, the women deliver a powerhouse version of “Angel,” swapping out verses and offering gorgeous harmonies on the chorus. At the end, they exchange bows of awe at one another.

Carlile is currently on a major tour in support of her album, In These Silent Days
