Brandi Carlile and Pink Honor Sinéad O’Connor with “Nothin Compares 2 U” Duet

Out Americana icon Brandi Carlile and pop rock legend Pink paid tribute on Wednesday to Irish singer-songwriter Sinéad O’Connor after news broke of O’Connor’s death.

Pink brought Carlile out during her set at the Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, Ohio. The two sang O’Connor’s classic “Nothing Compares 2 U.”

“When I was a little girl, my mom grew up in Atlantic City and I used to go down to the Ocean City Boardwalk with my $10 and I would make a demo tape,” Pink told the crowd before she sang. “I would make a little cassette tape and imagine it was my demo for the record company.”

Two of her favorites to record were Whitney Houston’s “Greatest Love of All” and “Nothing Compares 2 U.”

“In honor of Sinead, and in honor of my very very talented friend Brandi Carlile, I asked her if she would come out here and sing this song with me,” Pink continued.

The song, written by Prince, made O’Connor a star. O’Connor’s family confirmed her death to the Guardian after the Irish Times reported it.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad,” the family said. “Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”

People magazine reports that an autopsy is set to determine the cause of death.

After the duet, Pink told the audience to be kind to each other.

“You just never know … what people are going through, so it’s not hard to give people a smile,” she said. “It’s not hard to be kind, I’m learning that lesson in this lifetime as well, we can all learn that together.”

Carlile wrote on Instagram that the performance was “bittersweet.”

Earlier in the day, the “Right on Time” singer posted, “She was right the whole time. I hope she found some peace.”
