Spencer, Hathaway, Tucci Shine in ‘The Witches’ Remake Trailer
Many children were playfully traumatized by the 1990 Angelica Huston film The Witches, and now a new generation gets to enjoy their own version of this endearingly-demeted story. The first trailer is out for the updated film adaptation of the classic Roald Dahl book, which is directed by Forrest Gump’s Robert Zemeckis and stars Octavia Spencer, Stanley Tucci, and Anne Hathaway.

The movie follows a young boy who moves in with his grandmother and accidentally discovers a worldwide coven of witches who plan to turn all of Earth’s children into mice. The original had a lot of fun and excitement for kids, but also some disturbing scenes involving kids morphing into mice and hideous witches masquerading as beautiful women. From the preview it looks like this remake isn’t afraid to reach for the same disturbing heights as the original.
Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer stars as a tough and loving grandmother ready to protect her family from the coven. Stanley Tucci brings his wit and charm to the production as the manager of the hotel unknowingly hosting the witches’ convention. Anne Hathaway, another Oscar winner, will take on Huston’s role as the hideous queen of the witches.
Youngster Jahzir Bruno (Atlanta) plays the lead of the film, portraying Spencer’s grandson who’s moved in with her after the death of his mother. If all of this isn’t enough for you, Kristin Chenoweth also brings her witchy ways to the movie.
The Witches was originally slated for a theatrical release, but instead becomes one of the first big films to switch to a streaming debut. It will premiere on HBO Max on October 22. The film is rated PG.
