Man gets beating while riding train from a complete stranger who’s “not with that gay sh*t”

Author: Juwan J. Holmes

The NYPD is on the search for an assailant that allegedly began beating up a 23 year-old man and yelling homophobic slurs in an assault that took place on the city subway. This is the latest in a string of anti-LGBTQ attacks on the subway this year, coinciding with a general rise of violence throughout the New York City public transit system as of late.

A reward of up to $3500 is being offered by NYPD’s Crime Stoppers program.

The attack took place on a Queens-bound “J” train stopped at Broadway Junction, within the 73rd Precinct in Brooklyn. There is a police precinct located within the train station, just downstairs from where the attack took place.

On August 26 around 11:30 pm EST, the eventual assailant approached the 23 year-old on the train and the brief encounter led to him saying, “I’m not with that gay shit,” police allege. He then began punching the other man repeatedly in the head and called him anti-gay slurs before the victim could escape the blitz attack.

The man remained on the train when it left the station. Others helped the victim, but he refused medical attention for his bruised lip.

The NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating the attack as a potential hate crime, according to 1010 WINS.

Several violent incidents while riding through the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) system in New York have seemed to occur in high profile since the pandemic, which ravaged the MTA’s ridership and revenue. Ridership remains low in part because people do not feel safe riding the subway.

An unknown assailant punched two young men in the face in the New York City subway on July 31 while making anti-gay statements. A 32-year-old woman tried to stop him from punching the teen and the alleged assailant punched her in the face as well.

In May, a man was stabbed with an ice pick on the “D” train heading toward the Bronx after being called “a faggot” because he moved away from his seat when his alleged assailant sat next to him.

That same day, a 55-year-old woman was pushed to the ground in a train station, leading to her phone being broken, and a train conductor was slashed in the face on a “J” train heading toward Queens.

Transit workers and advocates have begun consistently calling for authorities to make the New York City subway and MTA transportation safe for New Yorkers, with many appealing to out Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in the last few months.

The suspect wanted in the most recent assault was seen wearing a black baseball cap, a graphic t-shirt, and cargo pants. He held a can of Arizona Iced Tea and a black bookbag based on surveillance images released by NYPD Crime Stoppers.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the NYPD Crime Stoppers via 800-577-TIPS or crimestoppers.nypdonline.org, or directly contact the NYPD’s 73rd Precinct.
