Leslie Jordan Sings with Dolly Parton, Brandi Carlile on Gospel Album

In 2020, actor Leslie Jordan became an Instagram sensation. A year later, he’s dropped a gospel album complete with collaborations with some of the most revered country and roots musicians out there. On Company’s Comin’, released Friday, Jordan pays homage to his own roots growing up in the Southern Baptist Church.
On the album, the star of Call Me Kat and Will & Grace performs with luminaries including Dolly Parton, Tanya Tucker, Brandi Carlile, T.J. Osborne, Eddie Vedder, and Morgane and Chris Stapleton.
In an interview with NPR, Jordan spoke about finding his way back to the music he grew up with as a gay person in a church that didn’t accept his identity.
“I grew up in the church, in the Southern Baptist church. When you grow up in the church, everything that we did — even socially — was around the church. It was just such a big part of our lives,” he said. “And I loved that music. And then, whatever ax I had to grind with the church as I got older and realized I was a homosexual … and it’s hard to embrace something that doesn’t embrace you. So I wandered away. But over the years you get older and you look back and you think, Well, you know what. Everybody’s doing the best they can with the life they have.”

A few of the gospel classics on the record include “This Little Light of Mine” with Katie Pruitt, “In the Sweet By and By” with Osborne, “When the Soul Never Dies” with Parton, and “When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder” with Tucker.
