‘Dashing in December’ Is the Gay Cowboy Christmas Romance We Need

It’s the year of the queer holiday rom-com or romance movie. And it’s about time. Last year Netflix’s Let It Snow and Freeform’s Ghosting: The Spirit of Christmas featured queer storylines, and it was a reminder that LGBTQ+ people need holiday movies too. There are several on the horizon, including the first studio-backed Christmas flick with queer lead characters, Happiest Season, directed by Clea DuVall and starring Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis. Stalwart romance movie networks have joined the fray with Lifetime’s The Christmas Setup and Hallmark’s The Christmas House. Now there’s a gay cowboy Christmas romance on the way.
In Dashing in December from MTV Studios, Wyatt (Peter Porte), a New York City financier, connects with his roots and a handsome ranch hand on his mom’s ranch/Winter Wonderland attraction when he returns home for the holidays to try to convince her to sell the place. While visiting his mother, Deb, played by Andie MacDowell, Wyatt meets Heath (Juan Pablo Di Pace) and the attraction is palpable. Cue the Brokeback Mountain, God’s Own Country gay ranch vibe, albeit with a decidedly happier ending for all.
It’s big city life versus the draw of the wide-open country in the movie that is set to premiere on Paramount TV with simulcasts on Logo, Pop, and TV Land on December 13. Written and directed by Jake Helgren, Dashing in December costars Caroline Harris and Carlos Sanz.
