CNN anchor Anderson Cooper has announced the birth of his second child.
In a segment of his show Thursday, Cooper told viewers about his newborn.
“I wanted to start out with some good news, which also happens to be very personal news,” he said. In the clip he spoke of the early “dark days of the pandemic.” In the footage he included photos of his son Wyatt from those early days and then new photos of Wyatt.
“This is Wyatt today. He is nearly 22 months old,” he said. “He is sweet, funny, and the greatest joy of my life. If he looks particularly happy in this picture, it’s because he now has a baby brother. His name is Sebastian and I would like you to meet him.”
The baby’s full name is Sebastian Luke Maisani-Cooper. The last name is hyphenated with the last name of Cooper’s ex Benjamin Maisani, with whom Anderson co-parents Wyatt.
“He was 6.8 pounds at birth and he was healthy and happy, and even his occasional hiccups are, to me, adorable,” he said. “He mostly just sleeps and eats and certainly poops, but he already seems like a wise and thoughtful little chap.”
Cooper also announced that Benjamin is in the process of adopting Wyatt legally. He went on to say that he would be taking time off to spend with the children.
Cooper similarly announced the first expansion of his family after Wyatt’s birth. At the time he spoke out about how as a gay child he “never thought it possible” that he could become a father. Both children were born via surrogacy.
“We want to thank the amazing doctors and nurses who helped bring Sebastian into the world and most of all thank the surrogate who carried Sebastian and gave birth to him,” Cooper said. “The sacrifices that she and her family — her entire family — made and the love that they gave Sebastian this past year has been extraodinary. We will never forget the kindness of her and her family and all surrogates who help bring new life and new love into the world.”
There have been no announcements made about a temporary replacement for Cooper’s broadcast. The anchor said he would be taking off the rest of this week and next.
