Stuart Sandford Turns Cruising Spots Into Art
Author: Stuart Sandford
Stuart Sandford has been shooting 35mm film (using his trusty Yashica T-5) since 2004 in his art school days back in his hometown of Sheffield, UK. Collected in this volume are works dating from that time up to the present, a number of them previously unpublished. Sandford has lived, worked, and traveled extensively across Europe, America, South Africa, and Russia, taking photographs of friends, lovers, and places and spaces along the way. Using a snapshot aesthetic, and in a style he calls “diaristic portraiture,” Sandford creates scenarios and invites intimate relations with his subject, devising timeless vignettes of adoration, pleasure, and love (whether real or imagined) within the images and the connected narratives of the lives of those he photographs. Also incorporated in this volume are works from his Outside series (2007-TBA), again shot using 35mm and many unpublished, documenting urban, rural and sometimes lost public cruising spaces where men have sex with men.
